The Oerlikon Cannon was employed widely throughout both the Pacific and European theaters of war, being installed in the German Messerschmitt BF-109, Japan’s Mitsubishi A6M, as well the refitted American Carriers. Its large .79 caliber shell was a vast improvement over the widely used .50 caliber round in older machine guns and the Oerlikon was used late into the war by International Army and Marine Units as well as the United States Navy.
